Considering Getting a Free PSP With your Mobile Phone?

The Sony Playstation Portable ( or Sony PSP) is exactly what it says on the tin. Sony have entered the handheld games console market with a condensed version of their popular Playstation, compacted into the size of a handheld console. The Sony PSP has everything from dazzling graphics to wireless connectivity packed into its sleek, stylish casing. A Sony PSP typically costs £130 - £140, quite a high price for a handheld console but the price is justified as the Sony PSP is widely considered aesthetically better, less bulky and more powerful than its competitor, the Nintendo DS.

Advantages of the Sony PSP

The Sony PSP only has one screen (as opposed to the Nintendo DS which has too) but fans of the Sony PSP say this is one of its defining features. The screen is 4.3" wide and made up of TFT colour reflective LCD. This means that the graphics appear crisp, sharp and clear, a definite plus for ease of gaming. The game format for the Sony PSP is via Universal Media Disc (or UMD). This means that Sony PSP games can come from any country in the world and you won't encounter any DVD style problems such as regional restrictions when loading your game. A very wide spectrum of genres are available for the Sony PSP and upon its release, many popular titles such as The Sims 2 and Gran Turismo were remade especially for the Sony PSP. In fact the version of Gran Turismo was so popular with PSP gamers that Gran Turismo 4 Mobile was developed, giving a specialised Gran Turismo experience for the Sony PSP. The Sony PSP is virtually a Playstation 3 in a smaller package. It has the technology for wireless internet surfing, which is useful for any gamer wanting to look up cheats and tips on the move. It has a hard drive of 1.8GB and a memory of 32MB which is a lot for a small console and accounts for the speedy game-play.

Disadvantages of the Sony PSP

Although the Sony PSP is wireless enabled, the wireless function can only be used in a Wi-Fi hotspot or by connecting to a home wireless connection. This can sometimes be tricky as in some places (such as schools and colleges) codes and passwords are needed to connect to a wireless network. The Sony PSP doesn't have as many buttons as some of its rivals which some gamers say makes the game play limited although Sony themselves have been quick to dismiss this, saying that all games made for the Sony PSP have all the options found in the same games made for other consoles, they are just located in a different way. The lesser amount of buttons can be seen as a disadvantage by some but many gamers believe that a few buttons is a good sacrifice to make the Sony PSP aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Summary of the Sony PSP

The Sony PSP is a small, handheld version of the Playstation 3, with everything the Playstation 3 holds but in a smaller package.
