What Is a Sat Nav?

The term ‘SatNav’ stands for ‘Satellite Navigation’ and refers to a device no bigger than two credit cards which enables you to navigate a car journey without having to keep pulling over to pour over a cumbersome map. SatNavs have been growing in popularity since their introduction to the public in 2000 and now 70% of all road uses own (or have owned) a SatNav.  So offering a free SatNav as a gift when buying a mobile phone is a very clever move.

The device works by asking you to input your starting postcode and your ending postcode. The SatNav will then work out the quickest route possible from point A to point B. Some of the more recent SatNav’s have a feature which enables them to receive traffic updates and recalculate routes around any traffic jams. Some people say that SatNav have made motorists lazy and that the younger generation will never learn to read maps if they keep relying on these machines. But in today’s world, where everything is done in an instant, consumers want it all and they want it now. They don’t want to wait around reading maps, they just want to get to their destination quickly and that’s why the SatNav has been so popular.

Tom Tom Sat Navs

One of the most popular SatNav brands is TomTom. They brand themselves as ‘the smart choice in personal navigation’ and provide satellite navigation not only for cars but for motorcycles as well. TomTom also offer a programme for PDA’s and mobile phones, which ensures you are never lost on the move.

The standard TomTom ONE V4 SatNav costs around £120. At 120g the TomTom ONE is incredibly lightweight and highly portable. It includes a ‘traffic-ready’ feature which means it can recalculate a route based on traffic reports, updated every half hour. The aim of the SatNav is to get you to your destination quickly and easily and this is exactly what this feature helps to do.

Another feature of the TomTom ONE V4 is the ‘safety camera alert’. The TomTom ONE V4 receives signals telling it where all the speed camera’s are, even if they have been recently moved. The TomTom will then tell you 200 meters before the speed camera that you are approaching one. You can then alter your speed and avoid a fine. This is a really popular feature in SatNavs as everyone knows how annoying it is to receive a speeding ticket when you’re only a few mph over the limit.

The ‘plug and go’ feature means that your SatNav does not have to be fully charged before you leave the house. You can plug it in inside your car and go, the SatNav will charge as its being used.

Navigo Sat Navs

Another brand is Navigo. Their Navigo GPS Sat Nav has a 3.5” screen and has the added feature of playing mp3 and mp4 files. Although this is hard to work out why as surely you’d be using it to navigate your route in a car instead of playing music from it. Unfortunately the Navigo GPS SatNav cannot do both at the same time.

It’s cheaper than the TomTom at an RRP of £75 but doesn’t include the traffic or speed camera features. The boxed product weighs 998g but the Navigo will weigh less although it isn’t stated how much it actually weighs on its own.

The only downside to the Navigo is people reporting that Navigo do not update their maps. So for example if a road gets closed for planned road repair, it won’t show up on the Navigo.
